Why can't I enter the code from the back of the card?

This article explains the role of CVV codes in fraud prevention and clarifies that they are optional for processing payments in LawPay Link.

Updated over a month ago

Overview

The CVV code (the 3 or 4-digit security code on your card) is designed as an extra layer of protection for merchants. It is primarily used to prevent fraud in e-commerce transactions where the merchant and cardholder are not face-to-face, as it helps verify that the customer physically possesses the card.

For most legal and accounting firms, the risk of this specific type of fraud is significantly lower because you typically have an established, professional relationship with your clients.

Key Information

  • Requirement: While providing a security code is recommended, it is not required to successfully process a credit card payment.

  • Processing Fees: Omitting the CVV code will have no impact on your processing fees.

  • Security & Compliance: PCI compliance regulations strictly prohibit LawPay Link from storing CVV information.

Why the Field is Missing or Locked

Because we cannot store this sensitive data, you may encounter certain areas in LawPay Link where:

  1. The CVV field is not displayed at all.

  2. The field is visible but "greyed out" or unpopulated, preventing manual entry.

This is a intentional security measure to ensure your firm remains compliant with global payment standards.
